5 Tips to Survive Finals Week

Finals week is all about finding a balance between getting everything done and not overworking yourself. We’ve complied five easy tips to help you get through your big week while keeping you healthy, rested, and ready to rock.

1. Find a good study spot

Whether it’s the library, a coffee shop, or student union, finding a space that can enhance your studying is imperative. While curling up in your sweats at home sounds appealing, roommates (and chores and the pantry, and your pets) can make it hard to focus. Look for good lighting and a calm, quiet atmosphere free of distractions. And don’t forget to bring the noise-cancelling headphones!

It’s all about time management. Keep in mind how many exams you need to study for and when they land on your calendar. Focusing on one project at a time (aka single-tasking) will keep you from getting overwhelmed.

3. Take breaks

Making time to come up for air is very important. Studies show that taking breaks increases productivity and retention. Plan to take a break every 90 minutes or so for at least 15 to 20 minutes. Go for a walk or run, grab a bite to eat, or chat with some friends to get a change of pace.

4. Eat well

Now is not the time to go on a fast food binge or decide to start a new elimination diet. We know it can be hard to think about preparing well-rounded meals while also cramming for finals, but keeping your brain and body nourished will make you feel your best, and help you beat lethargy. Snack on protein-rich foods like nuts, trail mix, yogurt, and hummus with veggies; look for fast, easy recipes when meal planning for the week.

5. Catch some zzz’s

Sleep is so important, especially when you have a big day coming up. Your brain needs to rest and process all the information you’ve been studying. Pulling an all-nighter is never a good idea; you’ll be groggy, tired, and out-of-sorts the next day. Arriving refreshed and ready to go will help you get through your final exams.
